About the event
During this workshop, participants will learn how to carve their own custom designs into wood blocks and how to transfer them onto a piece of paper using naturally crafted dyes! All levels of experience are welcome, but as we will be using sharp tools, we ask that all participants be over the age of 14. Wood, tools, and materials will be provided; all you need to bring is your imagination! If you would like to print your custom design onto something other than paper, feel free to bring your own items! All levels of experience are welcome! Our team can guide you through the process and answer any questions you may have.
Wood block printing was the first form of mass-produced art, which led to the modern printing of magazines, movie posters, and so much more. Europeans had been printing plants onto paper since as early as the 1500s, and Ukiyo-e Wood Block Printing appeared in Japan in the early 1600s. Allowing for mass-produced prints to meet the growing demand for art and literature among an increasingly well-educated population.
Participants will take home their wood block which they can continue printing with on a variety of mediums.
